Shelling in Sanibel Island

While Sanibel is best known for its shelling potential, the activity is pursued all along the beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel Island. It is especially good in less populated areas, like North Captiva and Cayo Costa Islands, noted for their starfish, conchs and sand dollars. A great way to find Neptune's treasures is to take a Sanibel Island shelling charter from one of the many guides. Look for seashells hidden just beneath the surface of the sand where the surf breaks. Many shells never make it over this point and can be collected by wading or snorkeling along the surf line.

There is a wide plateau of relatively shallow water and sandy bottom adjoining on the south side of the island which makes it perfect for shelling on Sanibel Island. This gradual slope of the Gulf of Mexico bottom acts like a ramp and encourages large numbers of shells to roll onto the beach, especially when driven by storms from the Northwest. These storms are common in December and January when cold fronts pass through Florida. This gentle slope also assures that many shells arrive in undamaged condition.

Enjoy Sanibel Island shelling when you reserve a room at the Sanibel Siesta.
